Campos Coffee, Alexandria

I love Campos coffee and always enjoyed a quick dash into the original branch at Newtown for a great cup of coffee (albeit at a premium price to other cafes). If I had to use one word to describe the Alexandria branch, it would be ‘busy’. I’ve been to the cafe a few times previously to pick up take-away coffee and you should be warned that it’s definitely not a fast place on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Like most other brunch cafes in Alexandria though, there’s a definite buzz at those times if you choose to eat in.

The Campos brunch menu isn’t large but there’s a good selection of egg dishes to choose from. I am a complete sucker for corn fritters though so I was delighted to see that they had halloumi and sweet potato corn fritters – like what?! 3 of the best vegetarian ingredients out there in one fritter?! Awesome. But more awesome in name, than in taste I’m afraid – it was good but it was just missing some flavour or a sauce. And unfortunately it couldn’t be improved by the runny yolk from the poached eggs as 1 of my 2 eggs were overcooked and no longer runny (a brunchers’ nightmare!). The chorizo had flavour but as you can see from the photo, was a little charred. If I go back for a quick breakfast, I will definitely be reverting back to their pastries (i.e. the humble croissant) which is what I usually have.

The coffee is decent but , if you drink a coffee at the Newtown branch, and then compare it to the Alexandria branch, the Newtown branch is miles ahead.
