Thoughts running through my head as I approached Two Chaps for a girls’ breakfast on a Saturday morning: what a random location (a fairly industrial street), thank goodness there’s easy street parking near by, and wow, look at all those people queuing outside the cafe!
Luckily, the wait wasn’t as long as I anticipated – we got there at about 9:30 and were seated by about 9:45 at a table right under the heater (yay, warmth!). The first thing I noticed was the pastry cabinet – oh my goodness, do they have a great range of pastries. Everything from finger buns (which I’m so going back to get next time!) to donuts to croissants to tarts. To solve our dilemma of choosing between a savoury (hearty!) breakfast and these beautiful sweets, we opted to get a savoury breakfast each and then share a few pastries.
By a “few pastries”, we got 3 pastries between the 5 of us (well 4 of us if you exclude one of my dining companions who was gluten free). I loved loved loved the rhubarb jam donut. That thick rhubarb jam was the perfect balance between sweet and tart and I loved how strongly the rhubarb flavour came across. The galette and the burnt butter choc chip cookie were also really nice but not something I could eat in large doses – that jam donut on the other hand, I could easily not have shared that…

Opting to order something that sounded somewhat like a lighter meal, I ordered the poached egg hot sandwich. Delicious it was, light it was not. What I really enjoyed about the sandwich was the sesame ciabatta (so many sesame seeds), the perfectly poached egg, and that fried scamorza (a milk cheese). Suffice to say, I was super full and satisfied!
