Taste of Village has a 4.7 average score from 221 Google Reviews. So it must be good right? Having read the reviews and checked out the menu, I was so excited to be trying this little Indian Restaurant on a random stretch of the Hume Highway. And it didn’t disappoint at all.

I have to begin by talking about the Goat Curry (on the right in the above photo). It was damn good and our favourite dish of the evening. I’m always a bit hesitant as if it isn’t cooked well, goat can be tough and taste a little game-y and in fact, the last time I had a Goat Curry at an Indian Restaurant, I found myself having to rudely pull the meat off the bone as it was so tough. The Taste of Village Goat Curry was perfection – there was a generous amount of meat, some on the bone, some off the bone but it was all SO SO tender. The curry itself was a medium level of spiciness, really aromatic and perfect with the rice and naan. Ah, even though it has only been a day so I was there, I can’t wait to go back to eat it again!
Next, I have to talk about the vegetarian curry (on the left in the above photo) we ordered in an attempt to eat some vegetables with our meal. The ‘Baingan Bartha’, a curry with smoked eggplant mashed up with tomato and spices was a little greasy but so flavoursome. The smokiness of the eggplant was the star of the dish.

We also ordered chicken biryani (top of above photo). I really enjoyed the spiced chicken (and again, the restaurant was quite generous with the amount of meat ) which was beautifully cooked on the bone – very tender and not dry at all. The rice itself was aromatic and quite mildly spiced. I enjoyed the dish but next time, will probably just order some regular rice to enjoy with the curry.
Our final savoury item was a garlic naan (bottom of above photo). Huge! Really great dough, chewy inside, crispy and slightly charred on the bottom but could have benefited from some more garlic to be honest. What I loved most about it though was that it wasn’t super greasy to the touch, it was just a great flat bread.

We also ordered the gulab jamun dessert served with butterscotch icecream as it was something neither of us had tried before. Gulab jamun is like a fried donut soaked in a sugary syrup but the catch is it is made from milk solids. As expected, the gulab jamun was really sweet but not sickeningly so and I really enjoyed it with the icecream.
Finally, the service. Phenomenal. The staff were so attentive to our needs and the food came out at a really quick pace. We also received free pappadums with a mint dip at the start to kick off our meal – great!

There were plenty of other interesting dishes on the menu that I am really looking forward to going back and trying (e.g. grilled items out of the tandoor, fish/seafood curries, chicken curries, roti bread).
So thumbs up to Google Reviews for providing a super accurate recommendation for great Indian food in the Burwood area. What review sites do you usually check out? – Comment below.
