Ipoh Club, Chatswood

So much food! For a $39 Cudo voucher, so much food! That was my main takeaway from eating at Ipoh Club such that when I sat down to write this review, I had to force myself to look at the big picture outside of the value of the voucher (for the record, I had enough takeaway left for two solo meals afterwards…)

The service at Ipoh Club was great. I have a minor peanut allergy and as soon as I mentioned that, they wheeled out the manager who was able to inform me exactly which dishes were 100% peanut free and which dishes had potential traces of peanuts (which with the minor nature of my allergy, I may have been able to eat at my own risk). Not many authentic Asian restaurants deal this well with people with dietary requirements.

The food was decent. Not the most amazing Malaysian food I’ve ever had (see my review on Penang Hawker in Campsie for example) but really decent. For the entrees, we had the fried chicken wings and chicken satay sticks (though I couldn’t try the satay sauce as I could smell the peanuts coming from the satay sauce!). The wings were pretty darn good, crunchy on the outside and well flavoured with salt, pepper, chilli, five spices and spring onions. The chicken skewers for the satay was moist and tasty even by itself without the sauce. My partner assured me that the sauce was just as tasty though as he cleaned it up.

However, the portion size grew substantially when our mains were delivered to the tables. Well, the beef rendang itself was a reasonable portion. The beef rendang was probably my least favourite dish – there was a bit too much liquid and not enough meat and unfortunately the rendang sauce was not spicy enough  (both in terms of spice or heat) to capture my attention.

When the hainan chicken came out though, I realised it was half the bird (literally!). The chicken also came with the typical sauces and also a large bowl of clear broth to wash the meal down. The chicken was soft and really well cooked. It was a relatively simple dish done well.

Our $39 voucher also came with a large bowl of rice each and a side of vegetables which was huge but much needed alongside all the protein. We also had a bowl of a barley/tofu skin type dessert each.

Overall, it was incredible value and great quality for the meagre price we paid. The staff were attentive, the food came in good time, and everything (but the beef rendang) was delicious.
