Dong Hae Sushi Bar, Campsie

It would be quite easy to walk past Dong Hae on the main Beamish Street in Campsie and 1. not realise that there is a Japanese restaurant inside or 2. see the restaurant but assume that given its modest exterior (and for that matter, modest interior) that it serves poor quality food. Far from it! For awhile, I have been raving on about the quality of the Malaysian restaurants in Campsie but this humble Japanese restaurant has been the biggest positive surprise ever.

Dong Hae seats about 10 people at the bar in front of the talented chef making sushi, and about 6 to 8 people at group tables, so it’s a small cosy venue. It feels really authentic to Japan and the staff are so friendly! When you sit down, you are immediately served a small salad and some hot green tea. If you’re at the bar, there’s a cute little ledge in front of you where your sushi tray sits comfortably.

Prices are incredibly reasonable and the servings are generous. I ordered the large sushi plate for $14.30. The fish, prawns, crab meat are super fresh. I’ll definitely be returning to try some of their other dishes – the gentleman next to me was eating a soba noodle set and it looked great!
