I’ve wanted to do a review on Mejico for awhile now as it’s one of my all-time favourite restaurants in Sydney and my go-to for any Mexican food cravings.

You have to, absolute have to, get the guacamole. I realise that guacamole is a simple dish that we can all make at home (yes, even me), but at Mejico, they make it at your table in the mortar and pestle and it is served with plantain chips. Those plantain chips are so crispy and salty, that they are just the right way to kick off the meal.

Usually I also get the corn lollipops which are just corn on the cob with a spicy mayo and topped with popcorn for good measure. The spicy mayo is just superb. This time though, I tried the charred corn and cactus salsa with blue corn tortillas. The charred flavour is great though I couldn’t tell you what the cactus tastes like.

Mejico do a great job with the larger plates too – both with meat and seafood. The sticky squid ink octopus is always reliably tender and served with a great spicy chorizo. I do wish the squid ink was used more in the dish though than just a smear on the bottom of the plate. The best surprise of the night for me though was the Cochinita Pibil, the pork shoulder served wrapped in a banana leaf. The meat must be slow cooked because it is melt in your mouth! It comes served with something called ‘gorditas’ that I had not heard of (just shows my ignorance of Mexican cuisine) which is a chewy fried pastry, pickled onion, yoghurt and the most amazing hot sauce which has a great kick.
Sides-wise, the watermelon salad is a must have for a fresh side with watermelon (duh), cucumbers and pistachio. The potato bravas is also exceptional with a crispy exterior and a chipotle aioli.
Finally, the tacos. They are an absolute stunner on the menu if you’re after something relatively light. The crispy squid one is my favourite!

However, the let down of the menu is probably the desserts. The churros are OK though I’m really not sure what to make of the cucumber and jalapeno granita but that might just be that I don’t love having chilli with my dessert.
If you haven’t been to Mejico though, you definitely should try it out sometime. They’re almost always packed for dinners, so best to book beforehand.
