It’s official – I have found my new favourite sushi train location in Sydney: Sushi Train, Newtown. I’ve done a number of Sushi Train reviews in the past 6 months including K’s Sushi in Burwood, Sushi Hotaru in Sydney CBD, and Genki Sushi in Sydney CBD.
I had heard good things about the Sushi Train in Newtown for quite some time now so when I found myself in the area recently and looking for a light dinner at 5pm, I naturally went to try it out.
Firstly, you have to let me rave on about the quality of the scallops. The raw scallop nigiri is one of my favourite sushi train dishes and the scallops at Sushi Train Newtown are just divine. They are so fresh, firm, sweet and plump (just look at them below!!!) and honestly, this is the best version of the scallop nigiri I’ve had in Sydney.

The shrimp nigiri is also really good. Not all sushi trains offer raw shrimp nigiri and Sushi Train Newtown does because their raw shrimp is fresh and sweet. I always find raw shrimp a lot sweeter than cooked shrimp.

I also really like the variety at Sushi Train – and to be clear, it’s not just the variety on the menu, the two sushi chefs working behind the counter are constantly putting new dishes onto the train which makes for a more interesting dining experience. For example, the tempura squid nigiri is a new dish for me and a delightful choice with the squid well cooked and the tempura batter nice and light without a greasy texture.
At 5PM, Sushi Train was about half full in a restaurant that sits probably less than 20 people. By the time I left at 5:30PM, it was completely packed with a number of people also waiting for takeaway and I can really see why it is so popular, even prior to peak dinner time.
Details: 316 King Street, Newtown NSW 2042
Sushi Train is a chain though I have yet to try out any of their other outlets in Dee Why, Marouba, Neutral Bay, Oxford and Randwick.
