Ananas is a small French restaurant with a great location overlooking Sydney Harbour. Tucked away at the Circular Quay end of Phillip Street, Ananas claims to offer “classic French food with a twist”. A few years ago, I had been to the restaurant when it was named Cafe Nice and I had also been to Ananas when it was in The Rocks in the Argyle Complex – both were great experiences so I was looking forward to trying the new Ananas location.
My dining companion and I tossed up whether to get one of the sizable mains each (mmmm duck tangine, or Moroccan spiced lamb shank) or whether to share a few smaller plates. We ended up sharing a few smaller plates to share.

This was my first time trying steak tartare and it was really well done. My dining companion commented that it tasted like a ‘Big Mac’ from Maccas which I had to agree was a fairly befitting description. I’m not sure what was mixed through the beef but there was definitely a pickle and onion taste as well as a certain cheesiness. Plus, it was served with a sweet brioche bread which added to the burger taste. The beef was tender, refreshing and overall, quite pleasant.

The huge surprise of the evening was the Parisian Spinach Gnocchi with zucchini, goat cheese curd and peas. I don’t often enjoy gnocchi at restaurants yet this was definitely the BEST gnocchi I’ve had. The flavours were light and delicate, unlike the heavier tomato or cream sauces that often accompany a gnocchi. The tarragon and the soft egg on the top were just the icing on top of the glorious cake. Amazing!
