Marigold is definitely a well known establishment in Chinatown, Sydney. And I love yum cha, so I thought I’d give the yum cha at Marigold a go. First observation was that on Sundays, they serve yum cha on both levels 4 and 5 – that’s a pretty promising sign! I was a bit hesitant about the queue but thankfully with just the two of us, we were escorted to a table straight away. Second observation, there was a great trolley:table ratio – in other words, there was always a steady flow of food being offered to our table.
However, this is a food review, and the food was average at best. Having been to Vinh Phat in Cabramatta the week before (which I maintain reigns supreme in the yum cha battles of Sydney), there was a noticeable difference in terms of ‘flour’ items i.e. the wrappers for the har gow and the rice noodle rolls. At Marigold, both are a little hard instead of soft and chewy, or in the case of the rice noodle rolls, soft and silky. The prawns / seafood in the har gow and rice noodles rolls did taste relatively fresh though and I really enjoyed the ginger tripe which was tender and not at all chewy.
My favourite dish was a dish I don’t think I’d ever had at yum cha before – a steamed (but fried) tofu with a shrimp / fish paste on top. It was so simple but so refreshing and just the right balance against all of our other greasy dishes.

Verdict? It might be well known but Marigold was a bit of a letdown and prices appeared to be a little more expensive than the yum cha venues in Cabramatta.

For other reviews in my yum cha series (because what else is better on a Sunday morning?!):
But Cabramatta is so far!!! Anywhere else in the city where you can get better Yum Cha?
