Photown, Alexandria

Photown is a hidden gem in Alexandria. It would be so easy to drive past and not realise that 1) it existed and that 2) given its location, it would serve delicious food befitting the weekend as it has the appearance of a weekday lunch spot for nearby workers.

Serving Vietnamese food, the menu is vast from banh mi (bread rolls with usually pork or chicken and salad), pho (beef noodle soup), other noodle dishes (such as laksa and bun bo hue) and vermicelli salads. What really caught my eye though was their specials board, which boasted of a new dish – ‘bun cha Hanoi’ which is basically a grilled pork vermicelli noodle salad with the meat left basking in a fish sauce dressing. It was served with vermicelli, bean sprouts, fresh herbs and pickled carrot. The meat was amazing – it had a slight charcoal flavour, was well marinated and after soaking in the fish sauce, was ridiculously delicious and juicy. Aside from grilled pork, there were also 2 pork meatballs in the bowl – they were peppery and nice, but not the star of the dish in the same way the grilled pork was. Overall, I’m keen to return to Photown and try some of their other dishes. A truly great find on the streets of Alexandria.
