Laos/Thai food is quite likely my favourite cuisine when eating out. There is a great range of fresh dishes such as salads, great BBQ meats and hot comfort foods such as stir fried noodles and tom yum soups.
My favourite Laos places are the ones near Fairfield Station (which I will review closer to summer so that I can better enjoy their salads!), but this time, I decided to give Spicy Aroma in Canley Heights a go.
Their best dish? The BBQ ox tongue. If you’ve never had it before, it might sound a bit strange but it really is delicious if done well. When done well like at Spicy Aroma, it is soft and tender with no weird smell that reminds you that it is tongue. The Spicy Aroma dish was also huge (I’m not sure if that’s a whole tongue, or more???)

Their worst dish? The Laos sausage. Laos sausage is typically fatty and soft, flavoursome with chilli and lemongrass, with rice mixed through the pork. Unfortunately at Spicy Aroma, the texture wasn’t great and it tasted as though either there was too much rice or the sausage hadn’t been packed tightly enough as it was falling apart.

The other dishes we had were the chicken feet salad (a cold salad with chopped up boneless chicken feet, red onions, lemongrass and coriander with a fish sauce based dressing) and the BBQ octopus. These were pretty enjoyable. However, my overarching thought from our dinner was that everything was a bit on the salty side.
Overall, it was decent, but definitely not as good as some of their Fairfield counterparts and felt a little steeper in price.
