It’s like a sushi train but it’s a personalised train service. The Genki concept is great – you order on the ipad at your table, and the food gets delivered on a train on the conveyor, stopping directly at your table. When you’ve collected your food off the train, you press a button, and voila, the train returns to the kitchen.
I have tried the Genki in Tokyo and so I had been looking forward to trying the one that opened up in Sydney, near Town Hall. The restaurant is underground, so I wasn’t sure what to expect until I ventured down the stairs – it was very well lit, with a yellow theme, and honestly reminded me of being in some parts of Japan. The service was great – really helpful and responsive, though if I were the owner, I’d be worried about how many staff members I had out the front of the restaurant given that the train essentially does the majority of the work for them…

The food was decent – not the best sushi I’ve had in Sydney but definitely good, fresh and reasonably priced. Apologies, my photos from that evening aren’t very good (I blame the overly bright lighting which cast shadows no matter which angle I turned! but there’s probably also user error involved… )

We tried quite a few sushi dishes that night from spicy salmon gunkan (yum!) to soft shell crab rolls (wrapped in an insane amount of sesame seeds, overwhelmingly so) to an unagi roll (eel is always a must for me!) and soft shell crab temakis (in need of a sauce given the crab was a little dry). But, my favourite dishes of the night were the last ones we ordered – the teriyaki whole squid (so tender and tasty) and a mini bowl of black pepper beef (a bit of heat on some very tender beef).

Overall, it was fun to go see the Genki in Sydney and I highly recommend it for an experience (and so you can get your video of the train arriving at your table) but I wouldn’t come back a second time – plenty of other places to eat sushi.
