Yum cha at Hung Cheung, Marrickville

Hung Cheung is a smaller and seemingly family run yum cha location, not like the large Phoenix chains which I guess, is a plus because the service is decent and they’re pretty efficient at serving you the dishes when you impatiently order off the menu instead of waiting for the food to come around.

The best dish that I had was probably the white tripe. It was steaming hot, gingery, and definitely not slimy just nice and chewy. Just don’t make the mistake of doing what I just did of googling what exactly tripe is…

Other dishes were pretty average. Everything tasted much more home made than the larger restaurants which was both good and bad – good because it didn’t taste as frozen or pre-manufactured, but bad because some things just weren’t quite up to the standards of other restaurants. E.g. the steamed prawn rice noodle rolls were a little stale and the har gow skin wasn’t soft and translucent.

The disappointment were the mango pancakes. I remember reading on another review before eating at Hung Cheung that the mango pancakes were excellent. Sadly not on the day I tried them as the pancake itself was a little hard, and there was a disproportionate amount of cream vs. mango in the filling making it almost difficult to find the mango.

If I had to compare Hung Cheung to the family run Fortune8 in Cabramatta, Fortune8 wins by a mile in terms of the food. To read my review on Fortune 8 – see here: https://imhangry.net/2017/04/18/yum-cha-at-fortune8-cabramatta/
