Is there anything more glorious and greasy than an Asian food court?! Perfect for those days when you’re feeling a bit dusty and need something from the wok or just a comforting noodle soup. One of my favourites outside Sydney CBD is the Mandarin Centre food court in Chatswood.

May’s Malaysian is a humble shop front (because let’s face it, nothing in this food court is fancy) where you can either choose from the hot dishes in the bain-marie or order one of their soups or rice dishes. I’m an absolute sucker whenever I see eggplant sambal so I opted for the 3 dishes + rice for $8, with eggplant sambal, beef black bean and a chicken curry.

It’s not a pretty sight of a dish but it hit the spot and was great value for an $8 lunch. In particular the chicken curry was great with a slightly creamy texture, with a touch of spice and very tender chicken pieces. However, the eggplant sambal was a little too mild for my taste – I much prefer the eggplant sambal at Malaysian Food House at the bottom of Hunter Connection in Sydney CBD – theirs has a much fuller flavour from the shrimp paste.

My dining companion enjoyed the chicken laksa. The soup was decent, but again lacking in the fullness of flavour.
