Green Gourmet for dessert

Green Gourmet is a vegan restaurant on King Street in Newtown. For carnivorous eaters like myself, don’t judge a book by the cover, because their food is great! Back when I was at uni, I often hit up their lunch buffet which you pay for by the 100g and features some flavoursome vegetarian and soy based dishes.

More recently though I went to try their desserts. Not going to lie, for a bunch of intelligent (or so we like to think) adults, there were quite a few of us at the table scratching our heads at how they made vegan cakes, particularly the cheesecake.

I tried a special they had going that night for $8 which came with a slice of cake (matcha and pistachio cheesecake in my case), some macaroons and a scoop of icecream (made from tofu of course). I’ve always enjoyed the Green Gourmet tofu icecream but this was my first time having the taro icecream and it was really nice and smooth with a distinct taro flavour. If you like super sweet desserts though, you probably won’t like the icecream there. The cheesecake was also unfortunately a bit bland. However, kudos to them on the plating – so so pretty!
